North of Gordes: Joucas, Vineyards, Castle, Lavender Fields and Sault
Exploring a part of Provence north of Gordes, we look at vineyards near Joucas and pass by a castle in the Foret de Javon on our way to Sault and the lavender fields around it.
Joucas
On our way north we pass the village of Joucas and stop to look at some vineyards nearby.
It is way to early for the grapes to be ripe, but not too early for the vines to attract an appreciative following of snails.
Chateau de Javon
Continuing north, in the Foret de Javon between the villages of Lioux and Sault, we find the Chateau de Javon (Javon Castle). The privately owned castle's history dates back to the 15th century (construction probably started about 1475), when the Baroncelli Family of Tuscany was in need of a residence away from the heat of Tuscan summers and away from the heat of political friction with the Medici family.
Lavender Fields (mostly near Sault)
Many farms in the area around the village of Sault are involved in growing lavender. We pick and choose some of the better fields to photograph.
Later on, however, we find an even better field (above) just off the D8 motorway northeast of Valensole.
Sault
Wheat is the other major crop around here, and as we approach the village of Sault we capture this classic Provencal scene.
It is market day in Sault, and all things related to lavender abound.
Of course the usual food items are also to be found...
... as well as a few oddities.
