East Toward Nice: Eoulx, Grasse, Gourdon and Caussols
Continuing eastward, we have a picnic lunch at the microscopic village of Eoulx and look at Grasse on our way to Gourdon and nearby Caussols.
Eoulx
The "populated place" of Eoulx is not even a village, but it is on the Michelin map and we stopped here to eat our picnic lunch. It was charming, though virtually deserted.
Grasse
On the other hand the city of Grasse has a population of 45,000, and we merely look it over from afar as we continue on to Gourdon.
Gourdon
Gourdon (population about 500) is a typical hilltop village of Provence. Perched on a rocky cliff which protected it from enemy marauders in the middle ages, it has a single entrance which could be readily defended. Today it prospers from its popularity with tourists drawn to its castle (Chateau de Gourdon, 12th century), its views of surrounding territory, and its folksy village charms.
Villagers gather in traditional costumes for a folk dance.
Caussols
As we tour the countryside around Gourdon we find these hay bales near Caussols.
